Meeting Minutes

AASPS Annual Business Meeting
Chicago, Illinois
June 24, 2009
(subject to approval at 2010 AASPS meeting)

The meeting was called to order by President Judy Cias.

It was moved and seconded that the minutes of the June 17, 2008 meeting in Lawrence, Kansas be approved. There was no discussion, the minutes were approved unanimously.

Retirement was announced by Sharon Fissel, Director of Policy Services for the Pennsylvania School Boards Association.

Judy was recognized for her outstanding service as president.

Judy and the California School Boards Association and Cathy Talbert and the Illinois Association of School Boards were enthusiastically recognized for their work in pulling off this joint training venture.

Based on the report from the nominating committee, officers for 2009 – 2010 were elected as follows:

Information about the 2010 AASPS conference was presented. The conference will be in Charlottesville, Virginia at the Omni Hotel June 7 – 9, 2010.

Business being concluded, the meeting adjourned.


AASPS Business Meeting
Lawrence, Kansas
June 17, 2008
(as approved at the AASPS meeting in June 2009)

The meeting was called to order by President Paul Getto, Kansas. 28 states (plus attendees from NSBA) were in attendance at the conference, with a total of 56 registrants. Other officers in attendance were Judy Cias, California, President-Elect, Elizabeth Ewing, Virginia, Secretary, and Cathy Talbert, Illinois, Immediate Past President.

It was moved by Julie Slavens, Indiana, and seconded by Ron Harder, Arkansas, that the minutes of the May 19, 2007 meeting in Chicago, Illinois, be approved. There was no discussion and the minutes were approved unanimously.

On recommendation of the Nominating Committee, chaired by Cathy Talbert, Illinois, Immediate Past President, Judy Cias, California, was elected President of AASPS for 2008-2009. Elizabeth Ewing, Virginia, was nominated for and elected President-Elect. Kelli Hopkins, Missouri, was nominated for and elected Secretary. The nominations were moved by Janine Turner, North Carolina, and seconded by Steve Bounds, Maryland. There were no nominations from the floor.

Information regarding the 2009 conference was distributed. The conference will be held June 22-24, 2009 at the Hyatt Regency in Chicago. It is being jointly hosted by the California and Illinois Associations in order to facilitate a joint meeting with the trainers’ group. The final day of the AASPS conference will be a joint meeting day with the Trainer’s Conference, which will be held June 24-27.

Paul Getto thanked Melissa Snickles for her work in organizing and preparing for the conference and also warmly thanked the attendees for visiting Kansas and participating in the conference.

It is also noted that during the course of the conference, recognition was given to Vin Mustaro of Connecticut, for his 50 years of service to public education. Cards and best wishes were provided to AASPS members Bill Scharffe, Michigan, and Louise Sauerland, Kentucky, who will be retiring this year.
